The Nether

Overview

The Nether part of a Minecraft speedrun usually follows this general route: Bastion -> Fortress -> Stronghold -> End Portal Room

Bastion

Bastion Remnants are used to obtain important resources, especially ender pearls, obsidian, string, and other useful items. Learning how to identify and route different Bastion types is an important part of Minecraft speedrunning.

General Tips

  • Bastions do not generate in Basalt Deltas, so avoid searching for one there.
  • Run through the route in creative mode first before trying it in real speedruns.
  • Learn the layout of each Bastion type before practising the routes.

E-Ray

Speedrunners use E-Ray to help locate Bastion Remnants in The Nether.

Bottom Treasure Room

In bottom treasure room routes, breaking the Magma Cube Spawner is important for two reasons. First, it makes the route safer. Second, it prevents the Magma Cube Spawner from interfering later when using Pie-Ray to locate a Nether Fortress.

Nether Fortress

After looting the Bastion, the next major goal is to locate a Nether Fortress and obtain Blaze Rods. These Blaze Rods will later be crafted into Blaze Powder for Eyes of Ender.

Pie-Ray

Pie-Ray can be used to help locate a Nether Fortress by "scanning" for Mob Spawners.

Pre-crafting

Post-Blind Split

  1. Build a Nether Portal to return to the Overworld.
  2. Locate the Stronghold using the Eye Measuring method (which is covered in the Set Up page).
  3. Go back to The Nether and travel toward the calculated Stronghold coordinates.
  4. Build another Nether Portal at around Y40 to maximize the chance of the portal appearing directly in or near the Stronghold.
  5. If you are blind travelling only, meaning you are not building a second portal, dig near the 4,4 section of the chunk when you reach the Stronghold location.
  6. Do not dig directly on 4,4, because it is the middle of the starter staircase. If there is a ravine or lava below, you could fall straight through.
  7. Any nearby coordinate combination from 3 to 5 is usually acceptable.
